About the visa
Educational exchange visits are permitted under the Standard Visitor rules for short, organised exchanges with UK schools. These visits broaden cultural understanding and are strictly visits—they do not allow work or long courses of study. Each participant must meet the general visitor requirements.
Eligibility & key rules
To qualify under the school exchange provisions:
- Students must be in full-time education at an overseas school
- Accompanying teachers or adults must be employed overseas
- Exchanges can be with state-funded or independent UK schools
- The visit must be mainly cultural or educational—not a formal course of study
- Safeguarding requirements apply for children: adequate care arrangements and parental consent
Visa exemptions for school exchanges: Pupils from France (under 18) on organised school exchanges are exempt from visa requirements. Pupils from Germany (under 19) on organised school exchanges are also exempt.
