What is a Skilled Worker Visa?

The UK Skilled Worker visa is the main route for sponsored long-term employment requiring a job offer from an approved sponsor in an eligible occupation that meets the route's skill and salary thresholds. From 22 July 2025, jobs normally must be at RQF 6 (graduate level) unless covered by specific exceptions such as the Immigration Salary List or the Temporary Shortage List, with limited transitional protections.

  • Stay up to 5 years per grant, with extensions possible and potential settlement after 5 years if eligibility is met.
  • Dependants eligibility is permitted for most RQF 6+ roles; restrictions apply to medium-skilled roles on the Temporary Shortage List and certain care roles unless transitional protections apply.
  • Path to permanent residence typically after 5 years, subject to salary, continuous residence, and other requirements.
  • Work rules allow limited supplementary work within set conditions; changing employer or role generally requires new sponsorship.

Points System

Understanding the Points-Based System

Skilled Worker visa applications are assessed on a 70-point system comprising 50 mandatory points and 20 tradeable salary points.

Mandatory Points (50 points)

  • Job offer/CoS from approved sponsor 20 points
  • Job at appropriate skill level 20 points
  • English language (B1 or higher) 10 points

Appropriate skill level is normally RQF 6+ from 22 July 2025, subject to ISL/TSL and transitional exceptions.

Tradeable Salary Points (20)

  • Option A: Standard salary meeting the general threshold and 100% of going rate
  • Option B/C: Relevant PhD or STEM PhD with reduced thresholds vs going rate
  • Option D: Immigration Salary List roles on set discounted thresholds
  • Option E: New entrant discount vs going rate, where eligible

Pay must meet the applicable option's minimum and the occupation's going rate. Sponsors must assign the correct CoS type and pay the Immigration Skills Charge where applicable.
