About the visa
The Academic Visitor Visa is a sub-category of the UK Standard Visitor route, allowing highly qualified academics and senior doctors or dentists to visit the UK for academic activities for up to 12 months. This visa is commonly used by:
- Professors and lecturers invited by a UK university
- Researchers on sabbatical collaborating on projects
- Examiners assessing UK PhD students
- Senior doctors or dentists in academic exchanges
General employment in the UK is not allowed.
Eligibility & key rules
To qualify under V 10.1, an academic must:
- Intend to undertake one or more of:
- (i) Formal exchange arrangements with UK counterparts, including doctors
- (ii) Research for their own purposes while on sabbatical leave
- (iii) If an eminent senior doctor or dentist: research, teaching, or clinical practice (not filling a permanent post)
- Be highly qualified within their field of expertise
- Be currently working in that field at an academic institution or institution of higher education overseas
- Provide a TB test certificate if Appendix Tuberculosis applies
Not eligible: PhD students (use the Student Visa), applicants seeking paid employment, or those without current overseas academic employment.

Costs
- Visiting academic (up to 12 months): £220
- Standard Visitor (up to 6 months): £127
- No healthcare surcharge for visits under 12 months

Application process
- Apply online via GOV.UK and pay the fee
- Book and attend a biometric appointment
- Upload or provide supporting documents
- Decision usually within 2–3 weeks (faster with priority services)
Common refusal reasons
- Weak evidence of overseas employment or intent to return
- Vague invitation letter without clear academic purpose
- Unclear or inconsistent financial documents
- Activities that go beyond the academic scope
