Digital travel permission for visa-exempt nationals visiting the UK for short stays under 6 months for tourism or business.
The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a digital permission required by non-visa nationals to travel to the UK for short visits, business, transit, or short study. It is linked electronically to your passport. The ETA is not a visa — it is a pre-travel screening requirement. You still need to satisfy Border Force on arrival.
Since 2 April 2025, all non-visa nationals (previously known as visa-exempt nationals) must have an ETA before travelling to the UK. This includes EU, EEA, and Swiss nationals. Rollout was phased: Gulf Cooperation Council nationals from November 2023, then other non-EEA nationals from January 2025, and finally EEA/Swiss nationals from April 2025. You do not need an ETA if you hold a valid UK visa, have permission to enter or stay, or are a British or Irish citizen.
Permitted: travel for visitor-permitted activities, including tourism, family visits, business meetings, conferences, short study (up to 6 months), and transit. Not permitted: work, access public funds, or any activity beyond the visitor rules.
The ETA costs £16. Apply online or via the ‘UK ETA’ app using your passport details and a photo. Most decisions are issued within 3 working days (often faster). The ETA is valid for 2 years or until your passport expires (whichever is sooner), and allows multiple entries during the validity period. Each visit may last up to 6 months.
