About the visa
The Creative Visit (within the UK Standard Visitor route, Appendix V) allows overseas artists, entertainers, musicians and their support staff to carry out specific creative activities in the UK for up to 6 months per visit.
Creative visitors can perform, compete, audition and make appearances. Importantly, paid performances are only permitted at designated permit-free festivals listed in Appendix Visitor: Permit Free Festival List. For other paid engagements, you will need the Permitted Paid Engagement route or a Creative Worker visa.
Eligibility & key rules
You must satisfy the genuine visitor test and demonstrate:
- A genuine, temporary creative purpose
- Sufficient funds for the visit
- You will leave the UK at the end of the visit
- Activities that do not amount to filling a role within a UK organisation
Permitted activities
Creative visitors may:
- Artists, entertainers, musicians: Perform at events, compete in competitions, take part in auditions, make personal appearances and promote their work
- Permit-free festivals: Perform at designated festivals (paid performances allowed)
- Film crews: Employed overseas, may visit the UK for location shoots on overseas-produced and financed content
- Support staff: Technical and personal crew employed overseas may accompany performers to the same events
- Prize money: May be received

Required documents
- Valid passport or travel document
- Invitation letter from UK event organiser, gallery, festival or venue detailing events, dates and activities
- Letter from overseas employer or agent confirming employment status and unpaid nature of UK activities (where applicable)
- Evidence of funds and accommodation
- Portfolio, promotional materials or evidence of professional creative career
Processing
- Apply online at least 3 months before travel
- Attend a visa application centre for biometrics
- Decision usually within 3 weeks
Common refusal reasons
- Invitation letter does not clearly state whether activities are paid or unpaid
- Activities amount to employment requiring a Creative Worker visa
- Applying for a paid engagement that is not at a permit-free festival
- Insufficient evidence of professional creative career or overseas employment
