What Is a UK Sponsor Licence?

A UK sponsor licence is an authorisation from the Home Office that allows your organisation to hire overseas workers on sponsored visa routes such as Skilled Worker, Temporary Worker, and Global Business Mobility. Without this licence, you cannot legally employ workers who require a sponsored visa.

The sponsorship system places significant responsibility on employers to act as gatekeepers of the immigration system. As a licensed sponsor, you must meet ongoing compliance duties including reporting changes via the Sponsorship Management System within required timeframes, maintaining records, carrying out right-to-work checks, and ensuring all sponsored roles meet the definition of an "eligible role."

Since 6 April 2024, sponsor licences no longer have a fixed expiry date — the previous 4-year renewal cycle was abolished. Your licence remains valid for as long as you continue to meet the eligibility requirements. This makes ongoing compliance more important than ever.

Yes. There is no minimum company size requirement. Businesses of all sizes, including small companies, can apply. Check eligibility requirements.

Licensed sponsors must: report changes via the Sponsorship Management System within required timeframes (up to 20 working days), maintain compliant record-keeping, comply with immigration and wider UK law, carry out right-to-work checks, and not recoup sponsorship fees from workers. Since December 2024, fee recoupment from Skilled Workers is prohibited, extended to all routes from April 2025.
