What is the UK Global Talent visa?

The Global Talent visa lets recognised leaders and potential leaders in academia and research, arts and culture, or digital technology live and work in the UK for up to 5 years at a time. Most applicants need an endorsement from an approved body first; winners of an eligible prestigious prize can apply for the visa directly, without an endorsement.

Who this route is for

This route is for an adult who can show exceptional talent or exceptional promise in one of the eligible fields. There is no minimum salary and no separate English language test to get the visa itself, because the route is assessed on the endorsement or prize rather than a job offer. A dependent partner and dependent children can apply alongside the main applicant.

Requirements

  • Field and ageThe applicant must be aged 18 or over and show exceptional talent (as a recognised leader) or exceptional promise (as a potential leader) in academia or research, arts and culture, or digital technology.
  • Endorsement, or an eligible prizeMost applicants need an endorsement letter from a Home Office approved endorsing body in their field, issued after a two-part process. A person who has won a prize on the published prestigious prizes list is treated as already showing exceptional talent and does not need an endorsement.
  • Applying in time on an endorsementWhere the first grant of permission relies on an endorsement letter, the visa application must be made no more than 3 months after the date on the letter, and the endorsement (or prize) must not have been withdrawn or suspended.
  • Extension: earned money in the fieldTo extend, the applicant must show they earned money in the UK during their last period of permission, in the field related to their endorsement or their prize.
  • Settlement: qualifying periodSettlement (indefinite leave to remain) needs a continuous qualifying period in the UK of 3 years for people endorsed by the Royal Society, British Academy, Royal Academy of Engineering or UK Research and Innovation, for people endorsed under the 'exceptional talent' criteria by Arts Council England or Tech Nation, and for people who applied using a listed prestigious prize. The qualifying period is 5 years for people endorsed under the 'exceptional promise' criteria by Arts Council England or Tech Nation.
  • Settlement: English languageSettlement also needs English language ability in speaking and listening to at least level B1, rising to level B2 for applications made on or after 26 March 2027, unless an exemption applies. There is no separate English language test to get the visa itself.
  • General suitabilityThe application must not fall for refusal under the general suitability requirements that apply across UK immigration routes.

Documents typically needed

  • Valid passport or other identity documentShows your identity and nationality.
  • Tuberculosis test resultsIf you're from a country where the test is required.
  • Written consent for a recent study award or scholarshipNeeded if you've had an award or scholarship covering UK study in the last year.
  • Certified translationFor any document that is not in English or Welsh.
  • Evidence of your prizeOnly asked for if the Home Office cannot confirm your win from publicly available information, such as the prize organisation's website.
  • Proof of your relationship to a partner or childIf they are applying with you.

How to apply

1

Check which field and route apply to you

Confirm you can show exceptional talent or exceptional promise in academia or research, arts and culture, or digital technology, and check whether you have an eligible prestigious prize or need an endorsement.

2

Apply for an endorsement, unless you have an eligible prize

Apply to the approved endorsing body for your field. Winners of a listed prestigious prize skip this step and apply for the visa directly.

3

Apply for the visa online

If you used an endorsement, apply within 3 months of the date on your endorsement letter, and provide the required supporting documents.

4

Prove your identity and give biometric information

Use the identity-checking app to scan your document, or attend an appointment to give your fingerprints and a photograph, depending on where you're from and your passport type.

5

Wait for a decision

Applications from outside the UK are usually decided within 3 weeks; applications to extend or switch from inside the UK are usually decided within 8 weeks.

Duration, extending and settlement

Permission is granted for the length the applicant chooses, up to the route's maximum for a single grant, and it can be renewed as many times as the published eligibility requirements continue to be met, with no overall limit on how long someone can stay this way. Time on the route can count towards the qualifying period for settlement (indefinite leave to remain), and how long that qualifying period is depends on the field and the type of endorsement or prize relied on.

If the application is refused

A refusal decision sets out the reasons under the published rules. Depending on the type of decision, an administrative review may be available to check whether the decision was wrong on the information available at the time, and the refusal notice explains the options and time limits that apply.

Common questions

Is there a language or salary requirement for the Global Talent visa?
No. GOV.UK states there is no minimum salary or language eligibility requirement to get the visa itself, because the route is assessed on your endorsement or prize rather than a job offer. English language ability is only required later, at the settlement stage.
Why does settlement take 3 years for some people and 5 years for others?
It depends on your field and the type of endorsement. A continuous qualifying period of 3 years applies if you were endorsed by the Royal Society, British Academy, Royal Academy of Engineering or UK Research and Innovation, endorsed under the 'exceptional talent' criteria by Arts Council England or Tech Nation, or granted your visa using a listed prestigious prize. A 5-year qualifying period applies if you were endorsed under the 'exceptional promise' criteria by Arts Council England or Tech Nation.
What do I need to show to extend my Global Talent visa?
You need to show you earned money in the UK during your last period of permission, in the field related to your endorsement or your prize, and that your endorsement or prize has not been withdrawn.
Can I apply for the Global Talent visa without an endorsement?
Yes, if you've won a prize on the published prestigious prizes list. This is treated as showing exceptional talent, so you can apply for the visa directly without an endorsement.
I already have a Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) visa. Can I extend it?
Yes. Applicants who currently hold a Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) visa can extend their stay under the Global Talent category.
Can my partner and children settle at the same time as me?
Not necessarily on the same timescale. A dependent partner or child may be able to apply to settle once they've lived in the UK for 5 years and meet the other eligibility requirements, which can be a different qualifying period from the main applicant's own settlement route.
What happens if a Global Talent application is refused?
The refusal decision explains the reasons under the published rules. Depending on the type of decision, an administrative review may be available to check whether it was wrong on the information available at the time.
For the employer

The employer's role

You have no sponsorship role in this route.

You have no sponsorship role in this route. There is no licence to hold, no certificate to assign, and no immigration skills charge to pay. Hiring is simple: you run the same right to work check you would run for anyone. On the academic and research fast track, though, your job offer is what the endorsement is built on, and your HR director signs for it.

Employer duties

  • Run the standard right to work checkYou check that the person can work for you in the UK before they start. A Global Talent holder has an eVisa, so the Home Office online service is the only way to evidence it. Ask them for their share code and run it through the employer part of that service. Looking at what they can see on their own account does not give you a statutory excuse.
  • Diary the follow-up checkThis is not an unrestricted right to work. The permission is time-limited, so the statutory excuse you get is time-limited too. Do a follow-up check on or before the date their permission ends. Keep your record of each check for the whole employment and for two years after it ends. Skipping the check exposes you to a civil penalty of up to £45,000 for each illegal worker, rising to up to £60,000 if you have been found employing one in the previous three years.
  • Expect to provide the endorsement paperwork on the fast trackWhere the endorsement runs on an eligible job offer at an institution approved by the endorsing bodies, your director of human resources, or equivalent, provides a statement of guarantee. It confirms the post and department, that the job needs a doctorate or equivalent research experience, and that the offer has been accepted. It also confirms how the post was advertised, that at least 2 references were received, and that at least 3 academic, research or innovation representatives were on the interview panel. The last limb is the expert one: at least one expert in their field on the interview panel, or at least one relevant expert, independent of the employing institution, consulted before the job offer was made. The endorsed funder route, at a research organisation approved by UK Research and Innovation, asks for a different document. The director of human resources provides a declaration there instead, and it carries no references or interview panel test. It covers the job title and department, the accepted offer or hosting agreement with at least a year left to run, and the person's role on a grant from an endorsed funder.
  • You can back an endorsement by evidence tooOutside the fast track, the person gathers letters of recommendation. In digital technology these must come from three different well-established individuals acknowledged as experts in the field, each with detailed knowledge of their work over a period of 12 months or more. Those letters have to be written for this application, so an old reference cannot be reused. In arts and culture, architecture, fashion design, and film and television, two of the three letters come from well-established organisations, and at least one of those organisations must be based in the UK.
  • Plan start dates around the endorsement stageThere are two stages, endorsement first and then the visa. You cannot pay to speed up the endorsement stage, only the visa stage. Once the endorsement letter is issued, the visa application has to follow within 3 months. Build the endorsement wait into your start date rather than the visa wait alone.
  • Do not run this as a sponsored hireThere is no certificate to assign and no sponsor reporting or monitoring to do. Employer guidance telling you to assign a certificate for every foreign worker is addressing sponsors, and it does not reach this route. The duty to check attendance and confirm someone is doing the role you sponsored them for applies to sponsored workers only.

Employer questions

Do we need a sponsor licence to hire someone on this visa?
No. The sponsor guidance states that Global Talent visa holders do not need to be sponsored, and the route does not appear on the list of routes a licence can cover. You run the same right to work check you would run for any hire, and no sponsor duties follow.
Do we pay the immigration skills charge?
No. The charge is triggered by assigning a certificate of sponsorship, and there is no certificate on this route. It reaches the Skilled Worker and Senior or Specialist Worker routes only. There is no licence fee, no certificate fee and no skills charge on this route.
What can they do on this visa?
Work for any employer, be self-employed, or be a company director. They can change or stop doing a job without telling the Home Office, and no minimum salary applies. The published bar is work as a professional sportsperson, including as a sports coach. There is also no access to public funds.
Who applies for the endorsement, us or them?
They do. The application goes to the Home Office, which sends it to an approved endorsing body in their field. Those bodies include the Royal Society, the British Academy, the Royal Academy of Engineering and Arts Council England, plus an approved body for digital technology. UK Research and Innovation sits outside that list. It endorses on the endorsed funder fast track, where it can cover any research field within the funder's remit. Someone holding a listed prestigious prize needs no endorsement at all.
Will we be asked for anything after they join?
Possibly a letter. To extend or settle, a Global Talent holder shows they have earned money in the field they were endorsed in, and a letter from their UK employer confirming that is one accepted way. There is no minimum level of earnings for it.
