About the visa

The Academic Visitor route (within the Standard Visitor Rules) allows highly qualified academics and senior doctors/dentists to visit the UK for research, formal exchanges, examining, or limited teaching, with some stays of up to 12 months for visiting academics.

Eligibility & key rules

Applicants must be employed overseas, be highly qualified in their field, and be invited by a UK institution for specific academic purposes. They must intend to return to their overseas employment.

What you can / cannot do

Permitted: collaborative research, formal exchanges, examining, and guest lecturing. Not permitted: general paid employment or activities beyond permitted academic tasks, or accessing public funds.

Apply online, attend biometrics, and provide a passport, invitation letter, proof of overseas employment and qualifications, and funding/accommodation evidence. Decisions typically within a few weeks.
