About the authorisation

The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a digital permission required by certain visa-exempt nationals to travel to the UK for short visits, business, transit, or short study. It is linked electronically to your passport.

Eligibility & rollout

ETA requirements are phased by nationality. Travellers who need an ETA must apply before boarding. An ETA does not guarantee entry: eligibility is confirmed by Border Force on arrival.

What you can / cannot do

Permitted: travel for visitor-permitted activities, including tourism, family or business visits, and short study. Not permitted: work or activities beyond the visitor rules.

Fees, documents & process

Apply online/app with passport details and a photo if requested. Most decisions are quick (often within 72 hours). The ETA is valid for multiple entries during its validity period.
